Mariners coach OK after hospital visit

Donnelly treated for stomach pains, could return to third base Tuesday

SAN FRANCISCO -- Mariners third-base coach Rich Donnelly was taken to a local hospital with stomach pains before the start of Monday's series opener with the Giants, but was released Monday night and could rejoin the team Tuesday.

"He had stomach pains and discomfort and went to the hospital as a precaution," manager Lloyd McClendon said after his team's 5-1 win. "I'm not exactly sure what the medical terminology is, but I know they took care of him and I think he's going to be OK. He's resting back at the hotel room now and hopefully should be good to go tomorrow."

Donnelly was replaced at third base by first-base coach Chris Woodward. Assistant hitting coach Andy Van Slyke took over first-base coaching duties for the game.

Donnelly, 68, has been the Mariners' third-base coach the past two seasons and is in his 29th season as a Major League coach. He's previously coached in the big leagues with the Dodgers, Brewers, Rockies, Marlins, Pirates and Rangers.
