Mariners, Major League Baseball and MLB Payers Association donate $225,000 to Oso slide recovery efforts

The Seattle Mariners, Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association are donating $225,000 to assist with the recovery from the massive mudslide in Snohomish County on March 22, 2014 that has claimed the lives of more than two dozen people with many others still missing.

The donation will be made to the American Red Cross Washington Landslide Relief Fund, which is assisting with disaster relief and recovery at the site of the mudslide across State Route 530 north of Seattle.

Additionally, volunteers for the Red Cross will be collecting donations from the public outside the gates of Safeco Field during the Mariners 2014 home Opening Night, on Tuesday, April 8, when the Mariners meet the Los Angeles Angels.

"The scope of this tragedy is almost too big to comprehend. Our entire community is grieving for those whose lives have been affected by the mudslide. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Oso, Washington in this difficult time," said Howard Lincoln, Seattle Mariners Chair and CEO.

"Major League Baseball extends its deepest condolences to everyone impacted by this tragedy," Baseball Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig said. "We stand alongside the Seattle Mariners in offering our game's unwavering support to the Oso community during this time of need."

"On behalf of the Players, in general, and Mariners Players, in particular, we would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the families, friends and neighbors of those affected by this devastating mudslide," said MLBPA Executive Director, Tony Clark. "We also commend the efforts of the first responders, volunteers and others, for their tireless efforts in assisting with the area's relief and recovery efforts."
