Marlins acquire Minor League Infielder Yordy Cabrera from Diamondbacks
Miami sends RHP Heath Bell and cash to Arizona
The Marlins today acquired minor league infielder Yordy Cabrera from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for right-handed pitcher Heath Bell and cash, as announced by Marlins’ President of Baseball Operations Larry Beinfest. Cabrera was acquired earlier today by Arizona in a separate transaction with the Oakland Athletics.
“This should be a positive change for Heath and the Marlins,” Beinfest said. “After a disappointing 2012 season, Heath gets a fresh start and this move gives us clarity as we begin our offseason roster improvement.”
Cabrera spent the entire 2012 season with single-A Lancaster in the California League, posting a .232 average (51x220) with 26 runs scored, nine doubles, two triples, three home runs and 21 RBI in an injury shortened campaign that saw him appear in just 60 games due to a right hip strain.
The Santo Domingo native, 22, was the Oakland Athletics’ second-round selection in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft out of Lakeland (FL) High School and is currently playing for the Phoenix Desert Dogs in the Arizona Fall League.
Bell, 35, finished the first season of a three-year deal in Miami with a 4-5 record, 5.09 ERA (63.2 IP/36 ER) and 19 saves (27 opportunities) in a team-leading 73 games. He owns a career record of 32-29 with a .3.30 ERA (545.2/200) and 187 saves over 508 appearances.
