Jennings, Capps due back Monday as rosters expand
Lefty returning less than month since beaning; righty out of Majors since May
ATLANTA -- Reinforcements are about to be on the way for the Marlins as rosters expand Monday.
Because the team is hopeful of making a serious playoff push, only a few additions are expected to be called up immediately.
"It's a different mindset than maybe when you're out of it, and you're trying to answer questions and things of that nature," president of baseball operations Michael Hill said. "The guys we bring, we think they can help us for what we feel is going to be an important month for us."
The team does plan on reinstating relievers Carter Capps (right elbow) and Dan Jennings (concussion) from the disabled list. Both are expected to be available Monday in the series opener with the Mets at Marlins Park.
Capps last pitched in a big league game May 25, and the hard-throwing right-hander threw two innings for Class A Jupiter in a rehab assignment game Saturday. Jennings tossed two innings at Jupiter on Friday. The lefty sustained a concussion after being struck on the head by a line drive at Pittsburgh on Aug. 7.
Infielder Enrique Hernandez and left-handed-hitting first baseman Justin Bour are candidates to be promoted from Triple-A New Orleans.
Catcher J.T. Realmuto at Double-A Jacksonville is also targeted to be promoted. When he is available will depend on if the Suns make the playoffs. If they do, Realmuto will remain in the Minors for the postseason.
The Marlins didn't make any major moves in the waiver trade period, because the club had added the pieces it felt were necessary July 31 when they acquired right-hander Jarred Cosart and Hernandez from the Astros.
"We felt like we accomplished what we wanted at the non-waiver Trade Deadline," Hill said. "Obviously, Cosart was a big acquisition for us, filling a huge need for us moving forward."
Reliever Bryan Morris, hampered by a right groin strain, is expected to be available in the next few days.
Morris is not on the disabled list, but he wasn't available for the series at Anaheim against the Angels and against the Braves at Atlanta.
