Marlins Make Florida High School Product First Selection of Day Two
JUPITER – The Miami Marlins today announced 14 selections during Day Two of Major League Baseball's 2012 First-Year Player Draft. The announcements were made by Vice President of Scouting Stan Meek.
A variety of prospects were taken with today’s selections, as Miami picked five right-handed pitchers, five infielders, three outfielders and a catcher. The Club selected five high school prospects, including position players with each of the first three selections of the day, and nine college prospects.
With their first selection of the day, the Marlins drafted Florida high school product Avery Romero in the third round (104th overall), a shortstop from Pedro Menendez High School (West St. Augustine). They followed that pick with OF Kolby Copeland, who was selected out of Parkway High School (Louisiana) in the Compensation B round (127th overall). The third pick of the day was OF Austin Dean from Klein Collins High School (Texas), taken in the fourth round (137th overall).
The Marlins had just one pick on the first day of the Draft, selecting LHP Andrew Heaney with the ninth overall pick. Heaney, a junior at Oklahoma State University, was the Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Year and a Division 1 First-Team, All-American.
