Marlins assistant Conine scaling new heights

MIAMI -- Jeff Conine has never shied away from testing his limits.

The former All-Star outfielder, who currently is a special assistant with the Marlins, has embarked on a new adventure -- climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

The 48-year-old has remained physically active since retiring in 2007. In 2008, for instance, he completed the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii.

Mount Kilimanjaro is his latest excursion.

"It doesn't surprise me that he would do something like that," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "He's a great athlete and an adventurous guy. He's done triathlons."

Conine isn't the first player with Marlins ties to take on Mount Kilimanjaro. Former Miami right-hander Kevin Slowey, who was released by the team in June, climbed the famous moutain along with R.A. Dickey in 2012.
