Byrd has fractured right wrist after HBP

PHILADELPHIA -- As if blowing a lead and losing a 5-4 game to the Phillies on a walk-off hit wasn't frustrating enough for the Reds on Tuesday night, they also received bad news regarding Marlon Byrd. The left fielder was diagnosed with a fractured right wrist after being hit by a pitch.

Byrd was leading off the top of the sixth inning when he was hit by an 81-mph pitch from Phillies starter Sean O'Sullivan. He remained in the game but departed before the bottom of the seventh to get X-rays.

The X-ray revealed the fracture. It is not known how long Byrd might be out.

"To what degree the injury is yet to be known; I don't know if it's a [disabled-list-requiring injury]," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "I'd guess it is, but I don't know that for sure. We're going to wait until we hear from the doctors and they read the X-rays and they make that decision. I would not anticipate having him available, not in this series, and there's a possibility he could be DL'd here, too."

The Reds have Skip Schumaker, Brennan Boesch and Kristopher Negron who can play the outfield, but none have the power potential of Byrd. Although he is hitting .212, his 10 home runs are second-highest on the club and 25 RBIs are third most. Earning $8 million this season, he was Cincinnati's key offseason acquisition in a Dec. 31 trade with the Phillies for pitching prospect Ben Lively.

Should Byrd go on the DL, the Reds could go in a couple of directions. On the 40-man roster at Triple-A Louisville are outfielders Chris Dominguez and Yorman Rodriguez, but both players aren't hitting well this season. Outfielder Steve Selsky and infielders Irving Falu and Ivan DeJesus Jr. are having good seasons but are not on the 40-man roster and would require a corresponding move. At Double-A Pensacola, Kyle Waldrop is having a good year at the plate and was impressive at Spring Training. Waldrop is also on the 40-man roster.
