Marte day to day after getting hit in hand

PITTSBURGH -- Starling Marte was hit by a pitch on his right hand in the third inning of Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Cubs, and the outfielder left the game in the fifth.

X-rays on the hand were negative, and Marte was diagnosed with a soft tissue injury. The club will see how he feels for Thursday's matinee finale.

"It was another situation where the last thing that pitcher is trying to do is hit a guy," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "I think Marte has led the league in being hit by pitches everywhere he's played.

"He does the best he can to get out of the way when the balls are tight. He's gotten a little bit better at it, but he's still getting nicked up and dinged up."
