Martinez scores rare winning run

ARLINGTON -- For the second time this season, Rangers pitcher Nick Martinez was used as a pinch-runner. This time he ended up scoring the winning run on Tuesday night in the Rangers' 3-2 victory over the Rays.

"I just told him don't take any chances," manager Ron Washington said. "I didn't want him going base to base. I told him to use his instincts but don't do anything crazy. It's not any different than him running the bases against a National League team."

Martinez went in to run for Geovany Soto in the 14th inning after he reached on a one-out error by third baseman Evan Longoria. He went to second on a single by Rougned Odor and to third on a single by Shin-Soo Choo. He scored when Adam Rosales drew a four-pitch walk.

Martinez was an infielder at Fordham and was also used as a pinch-runner against the Nationals on June 1. He is the first Rangers pitcher to score a run as a pinch-runner since Bobby Witt on June 30, 1990 in Boston.
