Matheny unsuccessful in early challenge vs. Bucs
ST. LOUIS -- Cardinals manager Mike Matheny unsuccessfully used a challenge early on Wednesday, when he contended in the first inning that first baseman Matt Adams was safe at third with a triple.
With two runners on and one out, Adams cleared the bases with a hit to center to give the Cardinals a two-run lead. He tried for his fourth triple of the season after rounding second but was thrown out at third by Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen.
Matheny quickly emerged from the dugout, suggesting that third baseman Pedro Alvarez had missed the tag. But after a 55-second review, the call was confirmed, sending Matheny to 2-12 on challenges this season.
