Barnes likes his stuff despite recent results

BOSTON -- Another game, another frustrating performance by the Red Sox's bullpen. Matt Barnes took the hit this time, allowing a go-ahead home run to Russell Martin in the 11th inning that proved to be the difference in a 5-4 loss to the Blue Jays on Saturday at Fenway Park.

Martin led off the inning, and on a 2-0 count, Barnes left a fastball in the middle of the plate that was deposited over the Green Monster. Barnes said the pitch was meant to be a fastball away.

"It was just one pitch," Barnes said. "Other than that, I thought everything else was good."

Fed a steady diet of fastballs the entire game, Martin was ready for it on the 2-0 pitch.

"I think there were two other at-bats where I got a 3-0 fastball, another 2-0 fastball and didn't do anything with it," Martin said. "Fortunately, fool me once, fool me twice, but the third time I'm going to get you -- and that's what happened."

While it hasn't been backed up by results, Barnes said that his stuff the past few days has felt better than at any point over the last month.

The right-hander has surrendered five runs in his last three games, including an outing on Friday against the Blue Jays in which he allowed three runs on three hits without recording an out.

"Baseball is a funny game that way," Barnes said. "When you feel great, you give up runs. When you don't feel great, you don't give them up."

Pitching more than one inning for the fifth time this season, Barnes finished the day allowing one run on two hits over two innings.

"I'll think about that pitch for the next few hours, and then it will be out of my head -- because we have a game tomorrow that we need to win," said Barnes.
