Cain struggles, Pence goes yard in loss to A's
Right-hander allows seven earned runs in just 2 2/3 innings
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- A split-squad A's club plated seven runs off San Francisco's Matt Cain on Saturday afternoon, forcing the right-hander out of the game after just 2 2/3 innings in an 8-1 Oakland victory at Scottsdale Stadium.
Cain was lights-out prior to Saturday, having allowed only one hit with no walks and nine strikeouts in eight scoreless innings.
On this day, he was tagged for three walks and six hits, including two damaging homers -- the first a two-run shot from Luke Montz in the second inning. Stephen Vogt collected a three-run homer in the third to continue a torrid spring.
Alberto Callaspo contributed with a first-inning RBI double.
A's starter Tommy Milone, now in line for a rotation spot following Friday's news of injuries to righties Jarrod Parker and A.J. Griffin, pitched out of a handful of jams in five scoreless innings of work, lowering his spring ERA to 3.86.
The lefty surrendered three hits and walked two with two strikeouts.
The Giants got on the board thanks to Hunter Pence's solo shot Fernando Abad in the sixth inning. It was the outfielder's fourth homer of Spring Training.
Up next: Right-hander Yusmeiro Petit gets his second start of the spring on Sunday as the Giants host the Indians in a 1:05 p.m. PT game in Scottsdale. Petit is 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA in four Cactus League appearances. The 29-year-old started seven games for the Giants in 2013. He'll square off against veteran right-hander Aaron Harang, who is 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA this spring while trying to land a job with Cleveland as a non-roster invite.
