ICYMI: Kemp's 4 RBIs, late rally not enough
San Diego staged an exciting two-run rally in the ninth inning of Tuesday's game against the Rangers at Petco Park, but Texas took an 8-6 victory. The three-hour, 40-minute contest certainly took a toll on the home team as three Padres players would leave the game with apparent injuries or discomfort.
Starter Andrew Cashner provided a decent performance in his first career appearance against Texas as he surrendered four earned runs on eight hits. Cashner did not issue a walk while also striking out four for a no-decision.
The Padres' bullpen saw mixed results as the pitching corps surrendered four runs -- only one of which was earned - in a wild seventh inning that allowed Texas to come out on top. Nick Vincent and Marcos Mateo provided solid outings in their return back to the big league club, while Kevin Quackenbush and Craig Kimbrel each turned in scoreless outings. Marc Rzepczynski was pegged with the loss after surrendering the lone earned run in the seventh. Shawn Kelley surrendered three unearned runs to allow the Rangers to pad their lead.
Kelley would eventually leave the seventh inning with an apparent right forearm strain. Catcher Derek Norris left in the same inning before Kelley after injuring his shoulder in a collision at the plate. First baseman Yonder Alonso also left the game in the third inning, experiencing discomfort and tightness in his lower back, forcing manager Pat Murphy to turn to his bench earlier than he would have liked.
Brett Wallace replaced Alonso and went 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored and a walk. Wallace joined Matt Kemp as the other Padres batter to collect three hits, as Kemp went 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Kemp finished the night a triple shy of the cycle while also collecting an outfield assist after attempting to throw out Adrian Beltre at home.
Yangervis Solarte and Cory Spangenberg also collected multiple hits, with Spangenberg collecting his fourth triple of the year and Solarte accounting for two of the Padres' six runs. The offense did come close the ninth inning -- bringing the tying and go-ahead runs to the plate a number of times in that frame -- but the valiant effort was ultimately for naught.
