Wieters plates five, Jackson homers twice in O's rout

SARASOTA, Fla. -- Matt Wieters had five RBIs and non-roster invitee Conor Jackson homered twice to lead the Orioles to a 12-3 win Grapefruit League win over the Phillies on Sunday afternoon.

Wieters connected for his first spring homer -- a three-run shot off Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick -- and Jackson followed two pitches later with a solo shot to left-field. The pair combined again to help fuel a seven-run Orioles fifth off Phillies lefty Jeremy Horst, with Wieters delivering a two-run double and Jackson driving a 2-1 pitch over the fence to bring his total to four RBIs. Jason Pridie also had a two-run homer, his second of the spring, to cap the fifth-inning scoring.

Kendrick pitched two innings, allowing all four runs via the homer, and collected a pair of strikeouts. Righty Zach Miner followed Kendrick and tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit.

Oriole starter Chris Tillman went 2 2/3 innings in his second spring game, allowing two runs -- both on Michael Young's homer -- and striking out three. Tillman was charged with four hits and exited after a two-out walk to Laynce Nix put him at his pitch count.

"I made a bad pitch either way," Tillman said when asked if he thought the Young homer was wind-aided. "I guess I deserved it, but fortunately, I finished a little bit better down in the zone.

"I think the wind's blowing for both teams."

Miguel Gonzalez, who ascended from Minor League camp to the big league rotation last year, pitched two scoreless innings in his Grapefruit League debut, allowing one baserunner on a walk to Cesar Hernandez. Hernandez was caught stealing second base, and Gonzalez cruised the rest of the outing.

Up next: The Orioles will enjoy their first off-day this spring on Monday before traveling to Dunedin, Fla., on Tuesday. Steve Johnson will get the start, with right-hander Jair Jurrjens also slated to pitch and Nolan Reimold expected to serve at designated hitter.
