Scherzer pitches well, knows wins will come

NEW YORK -- Nationals right-hander Max Scherzer proved that his problems with his right thumb are a thing of the past. In fact, he was very good on Friday night, but the Mets won the game, 4-0, at Citi Field.

Scherzer pitched seven innings, allowed one run on five hits and struck out 10 batters. It marked the 26th time in his career that he struck out 10 or more batters in a game.

The only mistake Scherzer made was allowing a solo home run to Michael Cuddyer in the fourth inning.

Scherzer said he wasn't going to beat himself up over the home run he allowed to Cuddyer. In fact, Scherzer felt grateful that he had solid defense behind him.

For example, in the third inning with a runner on first, center fielder Michael Taylor was able to make a great running catch off the bat of Kevin Plawecki.

An inning later Bryce Harper was able throw out Curtis Granderson at the plate after Juan Lagares singled to right field to end the inning.

"The defense played great. I thought I did some things well on the mound tonight. It's just a tough-luck loss," Scherzer said.

Scherzer so far this season is 1-3 with a 1.26 ERA in five starts.

It shows that he is not getting the run support he needs to win games. But according to teammate Dan Uggla, Scherzer doesn't care about personal records.

"He is the last person who wants you to feel sorry for him," Uggla said. "He is about the team. He is about winning and getting things going. It's not about his personal stats. He is out there fighting, we are [all] out there fighting.

"We understand that he has pitched his [butt] off this year. It just so happens we haven't given him much run support. That's the way the game goes sometimes. It's not going to be like that all year. He knows that. We know that."
