James McCann Named Tigers Rookie of the Year by the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association

DETROIT - Detroit Tigers catcher James McCann was named the Tigers Rookie of the Year by the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association today.

McCann hit .264 (106x401) with 32 runs scored, 18 doubles, five triples, seven home runs and 41 RBI in 114 games during his rookie season. McCann ranked fourth among American League rookies with 29 multi-hit games, while he was fifth with five triples, seventh with 106 hits, 155 total bases and 41 RBI and tied for seventh with 18 doubles.

Defensively, McCann led all major league catchers with a 1.000 fielding percentage (777TC/0E) after not committing an error in 112 games. McCann became the sixth catcher in major league history to catch at least 100 games in a season and not commit an error. He also ranked tied for third in the AL with 24 catcher caught stealing, while he was ninth with a 40.6 caught stealing percentage.

McCann will be presented with his award prior to a 2016 Tigers home game at Comerica Park. The Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association has selected a Tigers Rookie of the Year since 1969.
