Medica has 2 HRs, 7 RBIs; Decker his 17th HR for Triple-A El Paso

Tommy Medica hit two homers, including a grand slam, and Cody Decker and Jason Hagerty added homers Sunday as Triple-A El Paso swept a doubleheader in Fresno by identical 7-1 scores.

It was a noteworthy day for players in the Padres farm system.

• Double-A San Antonio outfielders Travis Jankowski (United States) and Tyson Gilles (Canada) met in the Pan American Games championship Sunday. Canada won its second straight Gold Medal. Gillies was 1-for-4 with a run scored in the finale. Jankowski, a Texas League All-Star, hit .385 (15-for-39) out of the leadoff spot for Team USA in the Pan Am Games with a home run, six runs scored and seven RBIs.

• Two other San Antonio outfielders continued their hot hitting. Right fielder Hunter Renfroe, 23, was 1-for-3 with his 10th homer, two RBIs and two runs scored Sunday. The Padres first-round pick (13th overall) in the 2013 draft, is hitting .410 (16-for-39) over the last 11 games to raise his batting average to a season-high .271. Left fielder Yeison Asencio, 25, was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored Sunday, and is 11-for-24 (.458) over the last six games with three doubles and 12 RBIs to raise his batting average to .297 with 44 RBIs.

• Right-hander James Needy pitched his first nine-inning complete game in the Padres' minor league system Sunday, holding Midland to one run on two hits, and three walks with seven strikeouts. Since returning to Double-A from El Paso, the 24-year-old Santana High grad is 3-0 with a 2.35 earned run average.

• Two Padres played for the National League team in the Dominican Republic Summer League All-Star Game. Catcher Jose Lezama was 0-for-1 with a walk and a run scored. Right-handed pitcher Emmanuel Clase allowed both American League runs in the 2-2 tie on two hits with two strikeouts in two-thirds of an inning.

First baseman Medica (.270) homered in both seven-inning wins Sunday, finishing 4-for-8 for the afternoon with seven RBIs. He has seven homers on the season. Decker (.267) hit his 17th homer of the season in four at-bats to up his career home run total to a Padres franchise minor league record 150. Catcher Hagerty (.327) was 2-for-4 in the opening game with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.

El Paso also received excellent pitching in the two games.

In the opener, right-handed starter Colin Rea (1-0, 5.73 ERA) gave up one run on three hits and four walks with four strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. Left-hander Frank Garces (1.86) allowed a hit with a strikeout in 1 1/3 scoreless innings to get his first save.

In the second game, right-handed starter Daniel McCutchen (5-5, 4.23 ERA) allowed two hits and a walk with five strikeouts over five scoreless innings. Right-hander Jerry Sullivan (2.31) pitched a perfect seventh.

Second baseman Ramiro Pena (.322) was 3-for-7 in the two games with a walk and two runs scored. Shortstop-third baseman Benji Gonzalez (.320) was 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored. Third baseman Casey McElroy (.274) was 2-for-4 with a steal and a run scored in the opener. Catcher Rocky Gale (.326) was 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored in the second game.

Tim Federowicz was promoted to El Paso from low Single-A Fort Wayne Sunday morning, and continued his rehab assignment by doubling in four at-bats in his Chihuahuas debut.

There were two other moves in the organization Sunday. Right-handed starter Bryan Rodriguez (4-11, 4.73 ERA at Double-A San Antonio) was promoted to El Paso. Left-handed reliever Eury De La Rosa was sent from El Paso to San Antonio.

DOUBLE-A SAN ANTONIO (41-52): MISSIONS 9, Frisco 1 -- Offensively, 3B Duanel Jones (.235) backed Renfroe and Asencio, going 2-for-3 with his fourth homer and three runs scored. 1B Luis Domoromo (.230) was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

HIGH SINGLE-A LAKE ELSINORE (37-56): MODESTO 5, Storm 4 -- Starting LHP Brad Wieck (4.05 ERA) allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits with five strikeouts in six innings. RHP Eric Yardley (2-4, 3.63) allowed two runs on three hits and a walk in an inning in the loss. LHP Chris Nunn (5.68) struck out one in a perfect inning. RF Donavan Tate (.216), the third overall pick in the 2009 draft, was 2-for-3 with his fourth homer, but he also committed his seventh error. CF Auston Bousfield (.294) hit his third homer in four at-bats. RF Nick Schulz (.242) was 2-for-4 with a double.

LOW SINGLE-A FORT WAYNE (46-46): DAYTON 5, TinCaps 4 -- 1B-3B Luis Tejada (.284) was 2-for-4 with a RBI. Slumping SS Ruddy Giron (.297) was 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored, although he committed his 16th error. Starting RHP Ernesto Montas (9-6, 3.28 ERA) allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits and three walks with two strikeouts in four innings. RHP Aaron Cressley (6.91) allowed a hit and three walks with a strikeout in two scoreless innings. RHP Colby Blueberg (0.98) struck out three in two perfect innings.

SHORT-SEASON SINGLE-A TRI-CITY (17-14): DUST DEVILS 5, Salem-Keizer 4 -- C Austin Allen (.218) drove in two runs with a double to cap a three-run ninth to give Tri-City a walk-off win. Allen had two doubles in five at-bats. 2B Kobie Tidwell (.220) was 2-for-3 with a RBI and run scored. LF Jose Carlos Urena (.298) was 2-for-5 with a RBI. Starting RHP Walker Lockett (2.58 ERA) allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits and a walk with six strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. RHP Phil Maton (1.98) allowed a hit and a walk with four strikeouts in 1 2/3 scoreless innings. RHP Corey Kimber (2-0, 1.80) allowed a hit with two strikeouts in a scoreless ninth.

ARIZONA ROOKIE PADRES (10-13): Padres 2, Diamondbacks 1 -- Starting RHP Emmanuel Ramirez (4-1, 0.65 ERA) allowed one run on two hits and two walks with five strikeouts in six innings. RHP Adonis Diaz (0.00) allowed a hit and a walk with one strikeout in an inning. RHP Nathan Foriest (1.64) struck out two in two perfect innings to get his second save. CF Jhonatan Pena (.263) was 2-for-4.
