Medical update on Mariners outfielder Franklin Gutierrez

PEORIA, Ariz. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jack Zduriencik announced today the following medical update on outfielder Franklin Gutierrez:

Gutierrez, 29, travelled to Seattle this morning from the Mariners Spring Training site in Peoria, Arizona. After his arrival in Seattle, he had an MRI taken and was examined by Dr. Edward Khalfayan, the Mariners Medical Director. Dr. Khalfayan reviewed both the MRI taken today, and the film from the MRI performed in Arizona on Feb. 28.

After reviewing the MRI films and examining Gutierrez, Dr. Khalfayan has diagnosed a partial tear of his right pectoral muscle. Gutierrez will be treated non-surgically. It is expected that Gutierrez will be able to begin baseball activities in approximately four weeks and will be re-evaluated on a week-to-week basis after that.

Gutierrez suffered the injury on Tuesday, February 28, making a throw from the outfield during a fielding drill.
