Wright, Cespedes heat up around Murphy

NEW YORK -- A change of setting did nothing to cool down Daniel Murphy or Yoenis Cespedes, but it did spark David Wright. And together the two-, three-, and four-hole hitters keyed the Mets to a 5-2 victory on Tuesday that boosted New York's lead in the best-of-seven National League Championship Series to 3-0.

The trio accounted for all five runs scored while going a combined 8-for-14 with an extra-base hit apiece. The production was more of the same for Murphy, who became the second player in postseason history to homer in five consecutive games when he took Kyle Hendricks deep with a third-inning solo shot.

Murphy, who finished with a two-hit night, has driven in a run in six consecutive games.

"We just want to watch," teammate Michael Conforto said of his teammate's amazing run. "It's incredible how locked in this guy is. There are guys who just step up in big games, big situations, and he is 100 percent one of those guys."

The Cubs have shown a desire to pitch around Murphy, but will continue to find that tough to do when he's sandwiched between two other productive bats.

Ahead of him, Wright, who was 2-for-23 this postseason before Tuesday, broke out with a three-hit night. He singled and scored a first-inning run and then connected for a one-out double that sparked a two-run seventh.

It meant that three times, Murphy came to bat with a man on base. And with Cespedes looming, the Cubs had to pitch to him.

Cespedes made New York pay multiple times, tallying a pair of RBI hits and setting up a wacky sixth-inning score with a single and stolen base.

"I think every player goes through some rough patches, and obviously I've had some rough patches in the previous games," Cespedes said. "But I'm trying to make up for that now."

With a three-hit night on Tuesday, Cespedes has at least one hit in 15 of his 18 career postseason games, and is 9-for-33 with two home runs and six RBIs this October.

For all the buildup about how this series pitted the Mets' young arms against the Cubs' young bats, it's been the experienced middle-of-the-order hitters in New York's lineup who have played a significant role in pushing the Mets to within a win of the World Series.

"You know, we've got a pretty good offensive club, especially in hitter's parks," manager Terry Collins said. "We've shown that all year long. Tonight we got some big hits."
