Young, Batista reinstated in series of moves
Ramirez placed on DL; Egbert designated for assignment
Young will take the hill on Tuesday night against the Nationals for the first time in more than a year after undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery on May 16 of last season. The 33-year-old was 1-0 with a 1.88 ERA in his first four starts as a Met prior to the setback.
As for Batista, a strained lower back forced him to the DL on May 20 after he had opened the season 1-1 with a 3.95 ERA over 13 appearances (four starts). He made one rehab start at Double-A Binghamton, allowing five runs (four earned) over seven innings.
Ramirez's placement on the DL comes after he strained his right hamstring celebrating Johan Santana's no-hitter last Friday. The move is retroactive to Thursday. Ramirez is 2-1 with a 4.78 ERA and one save in 22 appearances.
The 29-year-old Egbert, meanwhile, appeared in just one game for the Mets, retiring the only two batters he faced in a May 28 contest against the Phillies.
The Mets also announced that pitcher Jonathon Niese was examined on Monday in New York for an accelerated heartbeat -- a condition he experienced on Sunday and on other occasions. Niese is cleared to pitch, though he will likely undergo a minimally invasive procedure to correct the condition this offseason.
