Mets option Plawecki, recall Recker

NEW YORK -- With a healthy Travis d'Arnaud ready to assume a regular workload behind the plate, the Mets on Tuesday optioned backup catcher Kevin Plawecki back to Triple-A Las Vegas, where he can play every day until rosters expand in September. To replace him, the team recalled Anthony Recker.

Plawecki, 24, stuck around when d'Arnaud returned from the disabled list on July 31 in part because the Mets wanted to give their starting catcher frequent off-days. But d'Arnaud has since displayed no ill effects from the sprained left elbow that sidelined him, giving the Mets enough confidence to send Plawecki back to the Minors, a move the club announced after Tuesday's 4-0 win over the Rockies. The former supplemental-round Draft pick hit just .154 over his final eight big league games, and will almost certainly be back as soon as rosters expand Sept. 1.

Recker, 31, has spent most of the last three seasons with the Mets, but his .123/.254/.228 slash line this summer earned him a ticket to Las Vegas in June. Recker has been successful there overall, posting a .924 OPS in 26 games, though he recently endured an 0-for-15 stretch at the plate. As long as the oft-injured d'Arnaud stays healthy, Recker will not receive significant playing time in New York.
