Edgin to realize dream of reaching Majors on Friday

In a somewhat surprisingly quick rise to the Majors, left-handed pitching prospect Josh Edgin will be called up from Triple-A Buffalo and added to the Mets' active roster on Friday. The move will correspond with starter Dillon Gee's placement on the disabled list.

Gee was hospitalized Tuesday with numbness in the fingers of his right hand, and a subsequent angiogram revealed a clot in a right shoulder artery. With uncertainty surrounding Gee and his availability going forward, Edgin's big league debut could serve somewhat as an audition for a bullpen spot in the second half.

Edgin, 25, wasn't selected until the 30th round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft, but he quickly impressed with an organizational-best 27 saves in 2011. He entered this season as the Mets' 20th ranked prospect according to MLB.com and wasted no time jumping from Double-A Binghamton to Buffalo.

The southpaw converted two saves and posted a 1.42 ERA in six games with Binghamton and was 3-2 with a 3.89 ERA in 35 appearances with Buffalo. He also notched 40 strikeouts in 37 innings of work at the Triple-A level.

Edgin, a 2011 South Atlantic League All-Star while with Class A Savannah, tossed 10 1/3 scoreless innings for the Mets during Spring Training this season, but he didn't break camp with the team. The southpaw didn't factor into a decision during the Grapefruit League, but he recorded two saves while striking out 13 and walking three.
