Meyer hits Minor League DL with shoulder inflammation

BALTIMORE -- Right-hander Alex Meyer was placed on the seven-day Minor League disabled list with right shoulder inflammation on Sunday, effectively ending the top prospect's season.

Meyer, ranked as the No. 30 overall prospect by MLB.com,, left his start with Triple-A Rochester on Saturday after facing just six batters. The Twins said he had trouble getting loose and was taken out for precautionary reasons.

The 24-year-old finishes his first season at Triple-A with a 3.52 ERA with 153 strikeouts and 64 walks in 130 1/3 innings. The injury also means he won't be a September callup for the Twins this year. He also dealt with shoulder problems last season, so the Twins monitored his workload this year, limiting both his pitch counts and innings.

To replace Meyer on Rochester's roster, the Twins brought up fellow top prospect Jose Berrios from Double-A New Britain.

Berrios, ranked as the No. 36 overall prospect by MLB.com, has posted a 2.43 ERA with 137 strikeouts and 35 walks in 137 innings between Class A Advanced Fort Myers and New Britain this season.
