Miami Marlins announce extension of player development contract

Greensboro to Remain Class A Affiliate through 2014 Season

GREENSBORO, N.C.The Greensboro Grasshoppers and Miami Marlins have extended their Player Development Contract through the end of the 2014 season, team officials announced today.

“The Miami Marlins are very pleased to continue our partnership with the Greensboro Grasshoppers,” said Marlins director of player development Brian Chattin. “It has been a tremendous place to call home for our players and staff for the past 10 years.”

Greensboro, the reigning South Atlantic League Champion, has been the Class A affiliate of the Marlins since the 2003 season, when the team was still known as the Bats. The Marlins are the only parent team the Grasshoppers have ever known.

“We are thrilled to continue our partnership with the Miami Marlins for another two years,” said Greensboro president and general manager Donald Moore. “They have sent us some incredible talent in the last 10 years and we have a great working relationship with (Marlins vice president of player development) Marty Scott, Brian Chattin and the rest of their staff.”

Greensboro will continue its SAL title defense tonight against host Asheville in Game One of the SAL Championship Series. The Club won its second consecutive SAL Northern division title with a two-game sweep of Hagerstown last week. The Grasshoppers won the Northern League first half with a 46-24 record, and finished with an overall record of 80-59; that is the most wins in a season since the Grasshoppers became a Marlins affiliate.

“Donald Moore and his staff have established one of the premier franchises in all of minor league baseball,” said Chattin. “They are first class individuals who treat everyone from our organization like family. We are honored to have them as our player development partner and look forward to many more years together.”
