Phelps makes second consecutive strong showing

MIAMI -- David Phelps' second straight quality start is something to build upon, but the Marlins' right-hander is more upset that he didn't make it through the seventh inning.

Phelps helped set the tone on Tuesday night in Miami's 4-3 win over the Mets at Marlins Park. But after he yielded back-to-back hits to open the seventh, his 91-pitch effort was over.

"I wish it would have finished a little better," Phelps said. "We go out and put up some runs. That leadoff hitter is a big out I have to get. I made a good pitch and he made a good swing on it."

The Marlins snapped a scoreless game with three runs in the sixth inning. Phelps opened the seventh by allowing a single to Kirk Nieuwenhuis. The right-hander got a hard ground ball from Anthony Recker. If handled, it could have led to a double play. But third baseman Martin Prado wasn't able to hold on to the hot shot that was ruled a single.

A.J. Ramos entered in relief, and he immediately got a boost from second baseman Dee Gordon, who robbed pinch-hitter Wilmer Flores with a leaping catch. Curtis Granderson singled off Ramos, loading the bases, and Juan Lagares tied it with a three-run double.

Phelps settled for a no-decision on a night he allowed two runs and seven hits with four strikeouts in six-plus innings.

His strong outing came after he threw seven shutout innings in Philadelphia on Thursday.

"[I'm] trusting my stuff and almost making them hit it," said Phelps of his recent success. "We have amazing infield defense and our outfield can run down a lot of balls, too. In this park, it's about staying over the plate, down in the zone and letting them put it in play."
