Turner placed on disabled list; Caminero recalled

WASHINGTON -- The Marlins are taking no chances with Jacob Turner's strained right shoulder.

After evaluating the 22-year-old on Wednesday, the club placed Turner on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Friday.

Turner was lined up to start against the Nationals on Wednesday night, but on Tuesday, he aggravated his shoulder while hitting in the batting cage.

To fill Turner's roster spot, the Marlins recalled reliever Arquimedes Caminero from Triple-A New Orleans.

Brad Hand, who made the club as a spot starter/long reliever candidate, will make Wednesday's start in place of Turner.

Turner woke up Wednesday morning still experiencing some tightness, so he was sent to South Florida for further testing, including an MRI. The Marlins are calling it a strained shoulder, but the club said it could be more of the upper back in the shoulder area.

"He was still a little bit stiff, so we sent him back to Miami to get an MRI," manager Mike Redmond said. "We hope to know more tomorrow. Obviously, he's going to go on the DL. Caminero was here, in anticipation of this happening."

In his lone start, Turner gave up five runs in six innings in a no-decision against the Rockies on Thursday.

Each day, the starting pitchers work on their hitting.

"They were going through their routine," Redmond said. "I don't know if he over swung. It doesn't matter. He took a swing and felt something in the shoulder/back area. He tried to go out and play catch, but was a little stiff."

For now, Hand will be in the rotation. They will re-evaluate if he continues to stay in Turner's spot.

Hand has been a starter. But being out of options, the lefty made the club as a reliever.

"He was stretched out in Spring Training," Redmond said. "The good thing is, the times we've been able to use him, he's been able to throw multiple innings."
