Pineda goes five innings in extended spring game

Right-hander underwent surgery last May to repair a torn labrum

Yankees right-hander Michael Pineda tossed five innings on Thursday at the club's Minor League complex, the Star-Ledger reported.

General Manager Brian Cashman told the Star-Ledger that Pineda's velocity was around 93 mph and that Pineda could begin a rehab assignment following his next session in Tampa, Fla.

Pineda underwent surgery last May to repair a torn labrum, and he has yet to throw a pitch for the Yankees after coming over from the Mariners for Jesus Montero as part of a January 2012 trade.

As a rookie with Seattle in 2011, Pineda went 9-10 with a 3.74 ERA, finishing fifth in the American League Rookie of the Year Award voting.

"I'm happy so far that he's healthy," Cashman told the Star-Ledger. "But he's obviously got a ways to go. We'll see. But so far so good."
