Scioscia loses second replay challenge of spring

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Mike Scioscia is now 0-for-2 in challenges -- but it is only Spring Training.

Mike Trout tried to go all the way around for an inside-the-park home run in Thursday's Dodgers-Angels game from Tempe Diablo Stadium, but he was called out by home-plate umpire Rob Drake on a bang-bang play.

Scioscia initially came out to argue the call-- awaiting word from Angels coordinator of Major League player information Nick Francona as Francona looked at the broadcast feed -- then challenged the play. But the call was upheld, just like it was when Scioscia challenged a botched hit-and-run during which Luis Jimenez was thrown out at second base at Salt River Fields on Monday.

Trout hit a bullet to straightaway center field against former Angels starter Dan Haren. Yasiel Puig came up short on the dive as the ball trickled to the fence, and third-base coach Gary DiSarcina waved Trout home. But Hanley Ramirez's relay throw beat Trout to home plate, and the Angels' 22-year-old outfielder couldn't slide around catcher A.J. Ellis' tag in time.

The replay process -- from the time the crew walked toward foul territory to speak with the fifth umpire in the TV truck beyond center field -- took 72 seconds.

Thursday was the second of at least 15 "replay games" the Angels have this spring.

Under the expanded-replay rules, which officially goes into effect at the start of the 2014 season, every manager starts the game with one challenge. If it's upheld, he gets one more. Umpires can't review a play under their own discretion -- except boundary calls on home runs and home-plate collisions -- until the start of the seventh inning.
