Hughes day-to-day with right shin contusion

Right-hander hit by comebacker, hopes to make next start

MINNEAPOLIS -- Twins right-hander Phil Hughes is considered day-to-day with a right shin contusion after being hit by a comebacker from Adam Dunn and exiting Thursday's 5-2 loss to the White Sox in the fourth inning.

Hughes had X-rays taken on his shin, but the results came back negative, which was a relief for Hughes, who is hopeful he'll be able to make his next start.

"It's pretty sore," Hughes said. "It should be a couple days before I can really do anything on it. I'm just thankful it wasn't broken, and we'll go from there. It's sore right now and I'm sure it'll be worse tomorrow, but just happy it should be all right in a few days."

Dunn led off the fourth and connected on a 1-2 cutter from Hughes, which hit off Hughes' leg for an infield single. Hughes remained behind the mound after the play in obvious pain, and was lifted from the game as a result.

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire and trainer Tony Leo went out to the mound to visit Hughes, who was able to walk off the field on his own accord.

"That ball got him solid, and with Adam Dunn hitting -- he's a big boy and hit it pretty hard," Gardenhire said. "You could see by his face out there he couldn't put any pressure on it. Pretty scary."

Hughes, who was charged with two runs on four hits in three-plus innings, was replaced by right-hander Samuel Deduno. Deduno allowed Dunn to score on a bases-loaded walk with two outs that inning, and ended up giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk over four innings.
