Morse in line to rejoin Marlins against Cubs

Veteran slugger to be activated from DL for last of three at Wrigley

CHICAGO -- The Marlins, in search of more power, will be adding some more pop to their lineup on Sunday. First baseman Michael Morse, who has been on the disabled list with a right ring finger sprain since May 26, will be reinstated and available for the club's 2:20 p.m. ET series finale against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Morse would have been ready sooner, but a few days ago, he tweaked his back. After four plate appearances in a rehab game on Friday for Class A Advanced Jupiter, and one more at-bat on Saturday, Morse expects to be ready.

The Marlins announced their plans to activate Morse following Saturday's 7-2 loss to the Cubs. To create roster space for Morse, right-hander Jarred Cosart, who gave up seven runs in 1 2/3 innings on Saturday, was optioned to Triple-A New Orleans.

With Giancarlo Stanton (broke left hand) on the DL, the Marlins are looking for a right-handed-hitting threat.

The 33-year-old Morse is a welcome addition, but he hasn't been in the lineup for Miami since May 23.

In 37 games before the finger injury, Morse was hitting .211 with two home runs and 10 RBIs.

In 12 rehab games, Morse was 10-for-38 (.263) with a home run and four RBIs.

Since Morse has been out, Justin Bour has handled the bulk of the playing time at first. The left-handed hitter has belted 10 home runs and driven in 21 runs. He had a string of four straight games with a homer snapped on Saturday, a game he didn't start.

The Marlins will try to keep Morse and Bour in the lineup.

Morse has played the outfield in his career, and aside from first base, he is an option to play either left field or right.
