Escobar likely set for position change in '16

ATLANTA -- Recently, Nationals manager Matt Williams said Anthony Rendon's future is at third base. If that's the case, where would Yunel Escobar play in the future?

Williams didn't have an answer to that question when asked on Thursday.

Escobar can also play shortstop and second base. He was supposed to start the 2015 season at second after he was acquired from the Athletics for reliever Tyler Clippard. But Escobar switched over to third during Spring Training after Rendon injured his knee. It's doubtful that Escobar would play at short, however, as that job is expected to belong to Trea Turner.

"It's depends. You have years like this one, you don't know," Williams said. "The intent was not to let [Escobar] play third base this year. You never know what is presented. I know that he's been a good teammate. He has played just about every day with a few nicks and bumps along the way. But he has been reliable and in the lineup a lot. That's something to be said for that."

Escobar is having his best year in the Major leagues, hitting .318 with nine home runs and 56 RBIs.
