Nats rained out Tuesday, no makeup date scheduled

WASHINGTON -- Mother Nature wouldn't give the Nationals a chance to break free of their skidding ways.

Tuesday's game between Washington and the Marlins was postponed as significant rain and lightning pounded Nationals Park. An announcement about the postponement popped up on the main scoreboard approximately 10 minutes after the projected 7:05 p.m. ET start time.

The game has yet to be rescheduled, but it will not take place during this current series, Nationals manager Matt Williams said. The series finale is scheduled for Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Both teams are off on Thursday. The Marlins next visit Washington from Sept. 26-28, the final series of the season.

The Nationals' starting pitcher for Wednesday's matchup remains Jordan Zimmermann (3-2, 3.95 ERA). Righty Blake Treinen, Tuesday's planned starter, will pitch out of the bullpen until his turn comes up next in the rotation.

"We'll stay on our normal rotation from [Wednesday] on. That's the plan," Williams said.

Henderson Alvarez (2-3, 3.21 ERA), Miami's scheduled starter on Tuesday, will face Zimmermann on Wednesday.

"Jordan is on normal rest," Williams continued. "To push everybody back, we had to do that with some off-days earlier in the month. We'd like to keep [the starters] on normal rest."

Treinen (0-2, 1.56 ERA) made his second Major League start on Thursday after the Nationals recalled him from Triple-A Syracuse to replace the injured Gio Gonzalez in the rotation. He allowed two runs and four hits over 5 2/3 innings, but walked five in a 3-1 loss at Pittsburgh.

"Blake [is] getting his feet wet here," Williams said. "He's got experience in the bullpen, so he'll do that for the next couple of days, until his turn comes up again.

Miami (27-25) won the opener, 3-2, on Monday as the Nationals (25-26) lost for the fifth time in six games. In that stretch, Washington scored 14 runs.

The National League East foes are in the midst of their third head-to-head series of the season. The Nationals have won five of seven against the Marlins.
