Cruz's baserunning gaffe proves costly

BALTIMORE -- Veteran Nelson Cruz made a costly baserunning gaffe in the fifth inning of Tuesday's 1-0 loss to the Red Sox.

Cruz gave the Orioles -- who were held to just two hits total -- their first baserunner off Boston's Brandon Workman in working a one-out walk. But the opportunity was erased when Cruz got doubled off first base after racing toward second on J.J. Hardy's infield popup.

Did Cruz think there were two outs? Yes.

"There's no excuse," Cruz said of his mistake. "I should know better. It shouldn't happen."
