Community Relations

Roberto Clemente Award Nominee: A's pitcher Sean Doolittle will be recognized as the A's nominee for the national 2013 Roberto Clemente Award during an on-field ceremony prior to game Tuesday, Sept. 17. The Roberto Clemente Award, sponsored by Chevrolet, recognizes the player who best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and positive contribution to their team. During his time with the A's, Doolittle has been involved with numerous charitable organizations, including Freedom Alliance and the A's Community Fund. Along with the rest of the A's bullpen, Doolittle founded the A's Relief program-which honors one local hero per month in an on-field ceremony-and has also recorded public service announcements for GovX, the first online verification ticketing service for U.S. military and government first responders.

Dave Stewart Community Service Award: A's relief pitcher Sean Doolittle has been named the recipient of the 2013 Dave Stewart Community Service Award, which is given annually to an A's player in recognition of charitable contributions throughout Northern California and across the nation. Stewart will present Doolittle with the award prior to the game on Wednesday, Sept. 18, in a special on-field ceremony.

Jim "Catfish" Hunter Award: The A's will present the 10th Annual Jim "Catfish" Hunter Award on Thursday, Sept. 19 prior to the game against the Minnesota Twins. Voted on by A's players, the award honors an A's player whose play on the field and conduct in the clubhouse best exemplifies the competitive, inspirational and courageous spirit of the Hall of Fame pitcher. This year's winner will be announced earlier in the day on Sept. 19.

Bill King College Scholarship: Prior to the game on Thursday, Sept. 19, the A's Community Fund will present a check for $3,000 to Melody Gonzales, a senior journalism major at San Jose State University, as the winner of the Bill King Scholarship. Melody carries a 3.8 GPA, and is pursuing a career in broadcast news after completing an internship at NBC Bay Area. The Bill King Scholarship was established in 2006 to award a scholarship to a Bay Area college student majoring in broadcasting or journalism, in memory of the legendary broadcaster Bill King, who served as the play-by-play voice of the A's for 25 seasons before passing away in October of 2005.

Little A's: On Wednesday, Sept. 18, as part of the Little A's program, deserving youth and their chaperones of non-profit organizations will have the opportunity to attend an A's game free of charge. In addition to a game ticket, each child receives a Bank of America souvenir and child-admission pass to the Oakland Zoo. The Little A's program is presented by Bank of America and supported by the Oakland Zoo and Clorox.

Green Stampede Homework Club: On select games throughout the season, elementary school students will visit O.co Coliseum to receive help with their homework from tutors and aids. An A's player will visit and sign autographs for the students as a way to congratulate them for their hard work. After the students have finished their homework, they are able to sit in the stands and watch the game.

A's Community Fund Silent Auctions: Every Saturday and Sunday home game, the A's Community Fund hosts a silent auction featuring signed and unsigned A's memorabilia as well as game-used items. In addition, Bill King "Holy Toledo" patches and pins will be available throughout the homestand at the silent auction table. The silent auctions are located in the A's fan center behind section 120 and end with the last out in the bottom of the 5th inning.

State Farm Pitch In Award: State Farm's 18,000 agents across the nation take pride in their "pitch in" spirit, doing all they can to get you to a better state. Prior to six A's games, including Sept. 21, a local State Farm agent will join an A's player or coach in recognizing local individuals and organizations with the State Farm Pitch In Award as a thank you for their efforts to make the community better.

Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association (MLBPAA) Auction: From Sept. 16-18, the MLBPAA will be at O.co Coliseum behind Section 217 to auction off memorabilia signed by Major League Baseball alumni. A portion of the proceeds from the auction will benefit the A's Community Fund.
