Aoki's leg fracture 80 percent healed

Giants outfielder can return before fractured fibula completely mended

PHOENIX -- The Giants had positive news on the recovery of outfielder Nori Aoki from a fractured fibula in his right leg.

A CT scan taken on the leg Saturday at a downtown Phoenix imaging lab revealed the injury was 80 percent healed. Aoki is currently taking batting practice and is running. His return is predicated upon how much tolerance there is to the pain moving forward.

"He may not be 100 percent for the rest of the season," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said prior to Saturday's second game of a three-game weekend series against the D-backs at Chase Field. "The fact that he's 80 percent healed, that's good news. He'll still be out here taking some swings, running, baseball work."

Asked how he felt after coming off the field, Aoki simply said: "Good."

Bochy had originally said Aoki would miss a few weeks, but the injury occurred June 20 in Los Angeles when Aoki was hit above the ankle with a pitch by Dodgers right-hander Carlos Frias. That was four weeks ago and he could be at least another two weeks away if you include a possible three-game Minor League rehab once he's in shape to play.

Bochy wouldn't put any timetable on it at this point and said Aoki could still be activated without a rehab stint as the the Giants did just prior to the All-Star break with Hunter Pence. But the real point is the fracture doesn't have to be completely healed for Aoki to return, said Giants head trainer Dave Groeschner.

"It just depends on how he does every day," Groeschner said. "You guys are thinking it has to be 100 percent before he comes back, but it doesn't have to be 100 percent."

Aoki was hitting .317 in 67 games when he went out.
