Reddick undergoes surgery on right wrist

A's outfielder Josh Reddick underwent successful surgery on his right wrist on Wednesday morning and is expected to be fully recovered by Spring Training, the team announced.

The procedure was performed at Newton Wellesley Hospital in Newton, Mass., by Dr. Mark Belsky, who also orchestrated the 2011 surgery on Reddick's left wrist.

The outfielder's offensive woes this year were strongly believed to be linked to his right wrist injury, which led to two disabled list stints. He batted just .226 overall in 114 games with 12 home runs after tallying 32 homers in 2012.

"I think he has the ability to get better," A's manager Bob Melvin said earlier this month. "I think he has the ability to hit for a higher average. I don't know that he's going to hit 30-some home runs again, but based on where he is in his career, I think he can get better.

"It certainly hampered him over the course of the season. He tried to play with it a couple of times and couldn't, so it does affect you."

The numbers certainly say it did.

Reddick hit .287 in his first 25 games following his first trip to the DL but was batting .213 overall when he returned to the DL a second time Aug. 26. He was reinstated Sept. 10 and hit .304 with two home runs and 10 RBIs over his final 17 games.

The 26-year-old Reddick is eligible for arbitration this winter for the first time in his career.
