OF Torres, LHP Dorminy selected for Midwest League All-Star Game

SS Giron climbs back above .400 with three hits, homer

Right fielder Nick Torres celebrated being selected to play in the Midwest League All-Star Game by going 4-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs Thursday night for low Single-A Fort Wayne.

Torres and starting pitcher Thomas Dorminy were named to the Eastern Division team for the Midwest League All-Star Game to be played June 23 in Peoria, Ill.

Torres, 21, was the Padres' fourth-round pick in last June's draft out of Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo. The 6-foot-1, Torres ranks sixth in the Midwest League with a .322 batting average. He leads the TinCaps in hits (58), doubles (17), runs (32) and on-base percentage (.382). He has two home runs and 22 RBIs and has an active seven-game hitting streak.

Dorminy, 23, was the Padres' 10th-round pick last June out of Faulkner University. The 6-foot left-hander from Florida is 5-3 with a 4.27 earned run average in 10 starts. He has 46 strikeouts with 23 walks and 52 hits allowed in 52 2/3 innings.

Third baseman Duanel Jones was also named to the Eastern Division All-Star team. But Jones, 21, has been promoted to Double-A San Antonio.
He was hitting .327 with the TinCaps with seven homers and 36 RBIs in 41 games when he was promoted.

Shortstop Ruddy Giron (pronounced Rudy Hey-rohn), 18, has not been in the Midwest League long enough to be considered for selection to play in the All-Star Game. Giron is hitting .410 (32-for-78) with three doubles, two triples, five homers, five steals, 12 RBIs and 20 runs scored in 19 games for the TinCaps.

Giron, who was 3-for-5 with his fifth homer and steal, two RBIs and three runs scored Thursday in 22-31 Fort Wayne's 10-5 win at Beloit, has a .439 on-base percentage and .692 slugging percentage for a 1.131 OPS.

Left fielder Franchy Cordero (.218) was 2-for-5 Thursday with a RBI and two runs scored. CF Michael Gettys (.232) was 2-for-5 with a RBI.

Right-handed starting pitcher Dinelson Lamet (1-3, 4.76 ERA) allowed two runs on four hits with two strikeouts over five innings to pick up his first win. Left-handed reliever Kyle McGrath (4.08 ERA) allowed three runs on four hits with two strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings.
Right-hander Colby Blueberg (1.56 ERA) allowed a hit with a walk in 1 1/3 scoreless innings.

AROUND THE FARM:

TRIPLE-A EL PASO (26-28): Omaha 9, CHIHUAHUAS 4 - Rehabbing Padres center fielder Melvin Upton Jr. (.283) was 2-for-5 with his first home run, a steal and two runs scored. 2B Ramiro Pena (.312) was 2-for-5 with a double but also committed two errors. LF Alex Dickerson of Poway High (.300) was 2-for-5 with a RBI. Starting RHP Chris Smith (4.64 ERA) allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks with four strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. RHP Cory Mazzoni (1-1, 2.41 ERA) allowed three runs on three hits and three walks in 1 1/3 innings.

DOUBLE-A SAN ANTONIO (22-30): MISSIONS 9, Arkansas 5 - CF Travis Jankowski was 2-for-4 with a double, his 16th stolen base and two runs scored. 2B Diego Goris (.263) was 3-for-4 with a RBI. SS Trea Turner (.328) was 2-for-5 with a RBI. Starting RHP Casey Kelly (3.76 ERA) allowed three runs on six hits and five walks with three strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. RHP Adam Cimber (2-1, 1.69 ERA) allowed a hit with two strikeouts in 1 2/3 scoreless innings to get the win.

HIGH SINGLE-A LAKE ELSINORE (24-29): Inland Empire 5-2, STORM 0-5 - 3B Gabriel Quintana (.234, 2-for-3, No. 6) and RF Yale Rosen (.210, No. 5) each hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning of the second game to give Lake Elsinore a split of the doubleheader. SS Jose Rondon (.278) was 2-for-3 with a double in the second game. 1B Marcus Davis (.245) was also 2-for-3. C Ryan Miller(.368) doubled in three at-bats for Lake Elsinore's lone hit in the opener. Starting RHP Matthew Shepherd (1-3, 6.50 ERA) allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk with five strikeouts in six innings to lose the opener. Starting LHP Travis Radke allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk with three strikeouts in four innings in his Storm debut in the second game. LHP Chris Nunn (2-0, 6.92 ERA) allowed a walk with two strikeouts in a hitless inning to get the win. RHP Eric Yardley (2.31 ERA) allowed a hit in a scoreless inning to get his system-leading 10th save.

DOMINICAN SUMMER LEAGUE PADRES (5-0): PADRES 6, White Sox 4 - 1B Enmanuel Arias (.500) drove in two runs with a homer in his only at-bat. DH Dayon Olmo (.318) was 1-for-3 with a home run, a walk, a steal and two runs scored. Starting LHP Eduardo Solano, 17, allowed two unearned runs on five hits and a walk with three strikeouts in four innings. RHP Emmanuel Clase (1-0) allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts in four innings to get the win. RHP Adrian Martinez allowed a hit with two strikeouts in a scoreless inning to get his first save.
