Offseason may bring front-office changes for Marlins
Potential shake-up raises questions about Beinfest's future with club
As the Marlins wind down their fourth straight losing season, the future of president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest is unclear. MLB.com has confirmed that Beinfest has asked team owner Jeffrey Loria about his standing with the club.
The Marlins have a longstanding policy not to comment on the job status of personnel during the season. Beinfest, under contract through 2015, has headed the organization's baseball operations since Loria assumed ownership of the Marlins in '02.
A year ago, the Marlins had a payroll of around $100 million and a high-profile manager in Ozzie Guillen. When the team underachieved, there were reports that Beinfest was on the hot seat. Instead, Beinfest stayed, and Guillen and members of his staff were eventually dismissed after a 69-93 campaign.
Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal, the Miami Herald and the South Florida Sun-Sentinel have reported that Beinfest's job is in jeopardy.
While there are questions surrounding the front office, there are indications that manager Mike Redmond and his staff will return. But there is a question regarding the hitting coach.
John Pierson, who opened the season as the Minor League field coordinator, was brought in as interim hitting coach in late July after Tino Martinez stepped down amid reports he was abusive to players.
