O's place reliever Roe on DL, recall Givens

SEATTLE -- The Orioles made a roster move before Monday night's game against the Mariners, placing reliever Chaz Roe on the 15-day disabled list because of right shoulder tendinitis and recalling right-hander Mychal Givens from Double-A Bowie.

Roe, 28, is 2-2 with a 3.12 ERA in 34 2/3 innings over 28 games for the Orioles this season. He has stranded 14 of 17 inherited runners.

"I don't think there's anything wrong with him structurally," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Monday afternoon. "It's just that Major League innings are a lot more stressful than Minor League innings. Every pitch is top torque … but he's been a healthy guy his whole career.

"He's never had any problems, and that's one of the allures of signing him. He's only 28 and he's pitched some very good innings for us. There's been times lately where the ball hasn't been coming out like it was. You hear it a lot. In Spring Training, they call it a dead arm period."

Givens, 25, has gone 1-0 and worked four scoreless innings in three appearances with the Orioles this season. In 35 games with Bowie, Givens went 4-2 with a 1.73 ERA and 15 saves.
