O's claim Lavarnway off waivers, release Berry

The Orioles claimed catcher Ryan Lavarnway off waivers from the Cubs on Tuesday and released outfielder Quintin Berry.

Lavarnway, 27, hit .283/.389/.370 in 62 games for Boston's Triple-A affiliate in 2014. He is a .201/.249/.315 hitter with five home runs in 301 Major League plate appearances since 2011. He spent his entire career with the Red Sox before being claimed off waivers by the Cubs last week.

The 30-year-old Berry hit .285/.382/.367 in 112 games last season with Triple-A Norfolk.
