Rondon claimed; Wieters moved to 60-day DL
Right-hander picked up off waivers from Rockies
NEW YORK -- The Orioles claimed right-handed pitcher Jorge Rondon off waivers from the Colorado Rockies on Sunday and, to create a 40-man roster spot, moved catcher Matt Wieters to the 60-day disabled list.
Wieters, on the DL since the start of the season, will catch eight innings in extended spring camp on Tuesday, followed by nine innings on Thursday and Saturday. The next step is to get him to catch on back-to-back days, but his return date won't be until at least June.
"Once we get through the back-to-back [days], he might head out somewhere, but that's still a ways away," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said of Wieters, who is coming back from last June's Tommy John surgery.
Rondon was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk and then designated by the Rockies on May 2. Colorado claimed him from the Cardinals in the offseason. The 27-year-old is a hard thrower and is 21-47 with a 4.60 ERA in 10 Minor League seasons.
