Orioles commemorate Sept. 11 anniversary
BALTIMORE -- The Orioles joined the rest of Major League Baseball on Wednesday night in commemorating the 12th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with special American flag caps for their contest against the Yankees.
The game-worn, autographed and authenticated hats will be auctioned online at orioles.com/auction and all proceeds will benefit the Frank J. Battaglia Signal 13 Foundation, which provides financial assistance to Baltimore Police Department personnel who suffer extreme personal emergencies. The auction runs until Wednesday, Sept. 18, at 11:59 p.m. ET.
"As Americans, we've got to pay tribute to the people that fell that September 11 morning and the people who reacted so quickly," said Orioles center fielder Adam Jones of Wednesday's commemorative efforts. "We are still fighting that war on terror. So, it's something that, as Americans, you learn and appreciate that you can't take your freedom for granted anymore. So it's something where you show your gratefulness for the U.S. military."
The Orioles also observed a moment of silence prior to the national anthem in honor of those who lost their lives in the terrorist attack and had the U.S. Army Quartet on tap to sing "God Bless America" during the seventh-inning stretch.
