Ortiz responds to Palmer's critical tweet

BOSTON -- On the same day he tied Joe DiMaggio on baseball's all-time RBI list, David Ortiz did something else he is well known for: speaking candidly when given a platform.

Ortiz was ejected from Sunday's loss to the Orioles after disputing a check-swing call by third-base umpire Jerry Meals. He then threw his bat to the ground and tossed his helmet as he trudged back into the clubhouse.

Ortiz was criticized shortly afterward by Orioles Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Palmer, who felt the slugger's behavior was "disrespectful" and expressed as much on social media.

On Monday, the Red Sox's designated hitter responded to Palmer's comment in typical "Big Papi" fashion. He was blunt, and he was animated.

"Is that how he wants to get respect from us?" Ortiz said. "Is that how he wants me to respect him? It's not going to happen."

Ortiz added that he could not remember Palmer offering up any similar criticisms in the past.

"Actually, I thought that [he] was one of my guys," he said. "All of a sudden, now he's killing me, huh? I guess anybody who wants to get famous or make some noise comes to Papi, right?"
