Martinez named Texas League Player of Week

VanMeter now 8-for-11 in rehab from April broken leg

San Antonio center fielder Alberth Martinez was named the Double-A Texas League Player of the Week. Martinez, 24, was 14-for-29 during the week with three doubles, four home runs and eight RBIs.

He led the Texas League in total bases last week and tied for the league lead in hits, homers and extra-base hits. He was second in batting average (.531), slugging percentage (1.000) and OPS (1.531) and tied for second with eight runs scored. The Venezuelan-born Martinez capped the week with a 3-for-5, two-homer, four-RBI performance Sunday.

Martinez is hitting .284 on the season with 16 doubles, three triples and nine homers for 47 RBIs and 49 runs scored. He has six steals.

Second baseman Kodie Tidwell (.253) was 2-for-3 with his first homer. Catcher Austin Allen (.215) was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Third baseman Carlos Belen (.224) had a double and a triple in five at-bats with a run scored. Righty Brett Kennedy (0-2, 3.24 earned run average) allowed four runs on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings. Righty Luis Hernandez (5.82) allowed two runs on two hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings. Righty Trevor Megill (3.00) allowed a run on two hits and two walks with two strikeouts in two innings.

ARIZONA ROOKIE PADRES (16-24): CUBS 6, Padres 0
Second baseman Josh VanMeter, who suffered a fractured fibula in mid-April, was 3-for-4 and Is now 8-for-11 in three rehab appearances in the ARL. Shortstop Jose Savinon (.243) was 2-for-2. Righty Manuel Gonzalez (0-4, 9.00 ERA) allowed six runs on six hits and three walks with two strikeouts in four innings. Lefty Will Headean (3.79) allowed two hits and a walk in two scoreless innings.

DOMINICAN SUMMER LEAGUE PADRES (27-34): PADRES 9, Diamondbacks 7
Catcher Ricardo Rodriguez (.244) homered. Left fielder Jose Sotillo (.281) was 3-for-4 with a double, a RBI and a run scored. Third baseman Felix Suarez (.221) was 2-for-5 with a stolen base, two RBIs and a run scored. Center fielder Dayon Olmo (.252) was 1-for-3 with two walks, his 14th steal and two runs scored. Starting pitcher Emmanuel Clase (2.14 ERA) allowed an unearned run on no hits and two walks with three strikeouts in four innings. Righty Jonathan Guzman (3.23) allowed four runs on three hits and two walks in an inning. Lefty Elby Cooper (1-0, 1.93) gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits and two walks with a strikeout in one inning.
Righty Luis Perez (1.90) gave up a hit in a scoreless inning to earn his fourth save.
