Cashner to start vs. Phillies on nine days' rest

SAN DIEGO -- As promised, right-handed pitcher Andrew Cashner will re-emerge in the Padres' starting rotation Tuesday when the team opens a three-game series on the road against the Phillies.

The Padres have vowed to watch Cashner's innings closely in the final month of the season as he's more than doubled his innings from last season.

Cashner will be pitching on nine days' rest and the team could bump him again before the season ends. One thing is for certain, the Padres won't shut Cashner down.

Cashner threw a career-high 119 pitches in his last start Saturday against the Dodgers, allowing one run on 10 hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in seven innings.

All told, Cashner has thrown 151 1/3 innings this season, far ahead of his workload from last season (69 2/3 innings).

"Cash is feeling good," said Padres manager Bud Black. "We want him to keep pitching. And he's going to make his starts. He's been great all year."

Adding right-hander Burch Smith to the rotation -- the rookie will pitch Friday against the Rockies -- has given the Padres flexibility and allowed Tyson Ross and Ian Kennedy an extra day of rest.
