Padres announce roster moves

Club claims RHP Thad Weber from Detroit and places RHP Jason Marquis on the 15-day DL

The San Diego Padres today announced they have claimed right-handed pitcher Thad Weber off outright waivers from the Detroit Tigers, optioned him to Triple-A Tucson and designated right-handed pitcher Neil Wagner for assignment. The club has also placed right-handed pitcher Jason Marquis on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured left wrist and recalled right-handed pitcher Brad Boxberger from Triple-A Tucson. Additionally, infielder Jason Bartlett has cleared unconditional release waivers and is now a free agent. Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcements.

Weber, 27, made his Big League debut with the Tigers this year, allowing four runs over 4.0 innings in two relief appearances. He has spent the majority of the season at Triple-A Toledo, where he has gone 7-11 with a 4.20 ERA (60 ER/128.2 IP) in 22 games (21 starts). Originally signed by the Tigers as a 16th-round selection in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft, Weber has gone 35-46 with a 4.03 ERA (301 ER/673.0 IP) in 115 games (113 starts) over parts of five minor league seasons.

Boxberger, 24, is making his third stint with the Padres after having been optioned prior to yesterday’s game. In 13 relief outings over his first Major League campaign this year, he has posted a 3.52 ERA (6 ER/15.1 IP) with 20 strikeouts against 13 walks. Over 34 relief appearances for Tucson this season, he has gone 2-2 with a 3.03 ERA (13 ER/38.2 IP) and 55 strikeouts against 19 walks.

Marquis, 34, has made 15 starts since joining the Padres this year, going 6-7 with a 4.04 ERA (42 ER/93.2 IP). Over parts of 13 Major League seasons with the Atlanta Braves (2000-03), St. Louis Cardinals (2004-06), Chicago Cubs (2007-08), Colorado Rockies (2009), Washington Nationals (2010-11), Arizona Diamondbacks (2011), Minnesota Twins (2012) and Padres (2012), he has gone 112-109 with a 4.60 ERA (921 ER/1803.1 IP) and 1,065 strikeouts against 687 walks in 348 games (289 starts).

Wagner, 28, has gone 3-0 with a 5.17 ERA (22 ER/38.1 IP) in 28 relief appearances for the Tucson Padre this season. He saw Major League action in 2011, making five relief appearances for the Oakland A’s. Over parts of seven minor league seasons in the Cleveland Indians (2006-10), A’s (2010-12) and Padres (2012) organizations, he has gone 19-24 with 45 saves and a 3.72 ERA (174 ER/420.2 IP) in 309 relief appearances.
