ICYMI: Padres take down LA with late rally

The Swinging Friars lived up to their nickname as San Diego pounded out 15 hits in a thrilling 10-7 comeback victory over the Dodgers in the series opener down at Petco Park. Thursday's win was a hard-fought oneafter the Friars saw an early 4-0 lead slip away in a five-run sixth inning for the Dodgers. With a three-run deficit before them in the sixth, the Padres manufactured six runs in the final three home frames to rally and secure the first game of a four-game set.

Rookie Colin Rea recorded a career-high six strikeouts over five innings, surpassing his previous mark of four K's in a single game. Rea surrendered only two earned runs on four hits while limiting the Dodgers to two walks on 76 pitches. Rea's efforts would only garner him a no-decision as the Padres' bullpen failed to hold on to a two-run lead.

Odrisamer Despaigne continued to struggle out of the 'pen as he surrendered three earned runs on two hits and one walk on 11 pitches in the sixth inning without recording a single out. He was relieved by Marc Rzepczynski, who surrendered two runs -- -one of which was earned -- on three hits over one inning. Kevin Quackenbush would ultimately earn the victory after two innings of solid relief work and a well-timed rally by the Padres' offense.

For the second time in the last three games, a Padres player finished a triple shy of the cycle as Yangervis Solarte went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Solarte's biggest hit was a solo home run in the seventh inning, estimated at an impressive 404 feet.

Justin Upton went a perfect 3-for-3 on the day with an RBI and three runs scored, while Derek Norris also collected three hits, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Jedd Gyorko went 2-for-4 with a go-ahead two-run homer in a huge eighth inning that saw four runs cross the plate to allow San Diego to regain the lead. Gyorko collected three RBI in total.

Outfielder Matt Kemp extended his active on-base streak to 23 straight games after slapping a two-run single in the second inning to record his 86th and 87th RBIs of the season. Kemp's 23-game on-base streak is the longest of his career and also the longest by a Padres player this season. Melvin Upton Jr. collected a pinch-hit RBI triple in the Padres' four-run rally in the eighth, helping the Friars to finish the day going 6-for-13 (.461) at the plate with runners in scoring position.
