Padres tender contracts to 31 players

SAN DIEGO -- Barring any late developments, the Padres will head to the Winter Meetings in Nashville, Tenn., on Sunday with 39 players on the 40-man roster after they tendered contracts to 31 players on Friday.

As expected, the team offered contracts to all of their arbitration-eligible players. The Padres did non-tender one player, left-handed pitcher Juan Oramas, who had Tommy John surgery during the season and wouldn't return until mid-season in 2013 at the earliest.

The Padres had 10 players under contract for 2013 before Friday -- reliever Huston Street; pitcher Cory Luebke; catchers Yasmani Grandal and Nick Hundley; infielder Jeudy Valdez and outfielders Kyle Blanks, Chris Denorfia, Mark Kotsay, Cameron Maybin and Carlos Quentin.

The players who were arbitration-eligible were outfielder Will Venable; shortstop Everth Cabrera; third baseman Chase Headley; relievers Luke Gregerson and Joe Thatcher; pitchers Clayton Richard and Edinson Volquez; and catcher John Baker.

Oramas, 22, was 3-4 with a 6.37 ERA in 35 1/3 innings with Double-A San Antonio before having surgery last June. Originally signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2006, Oramas went 25-19 with a 3.24 ERA over parts of five Minor League seasons.

The Padres also have two players on their restricted list -- catcher Grandal and pitcher Jose De Paula. Those players don't count toward the 40-man roster.
