Myers 4-6 weeks away from baseball activities

SAN DIEGO -- Outfielder Wil Myers received promising news on Saturday about the progress of his left wrist following surgery earlier this month.

Myers wasn't sure of his exact timeline for when he can begin baseball activities, but said it should be from four to six weeks. Interim manager Pat Murphy said that he plans to meet with trainers to get the exact schedule for Myers' recovery.

"[The doctor] said it looked good, there is no bruising or discoloration. So that is a good sign," Myers said. "He was very optimistic, so that made me happy."

The 24-year-old flew to Arizona in the morning and back to San Diego immediately after meeting with his doctor and had his stitches taken out and soft cast removed.

Myers played catch during batting practice before Saturday night's game against the D-backs at Petco Park.

Myers had surgery on June 18 to remove the bone spur in his left wrist. He was placed on the disabled list May 11 with tendonitis and returned June 11, playing three games before returning to the DL.

"There is so much more room in there now for the tendon to move, so it shouldn't come back," he said.

Besides resting his wrist, Myers said that he needs to work on mobility and strengthening. He said he lost some muscle during the injury.

"I got to strengthen and get my grip back," he said.

Murphy, who spoke about Myers absence being "a big blow" to the team, said he is hopeful about his potential return.

"It would be great," Murphy said. "Good players help teams win. He's a good player and a great guy. I look forward to his return, whenever it is. I want to make sure he is healthy whenever he gets back."

In the meantime, Myers joked about needing to find a hobby as he waits to recover fully. He did add that he started doing some fantasy football homework already.

"Obviously, I'd rather be playing," Myers said. "I schedule my days around the games on the road, so my days are pretty boring while the team is on the road."
