Phillies activate Lee amid flurry of roster moves

Brignac, Nieves return from DL; Gwynn, Hernandez, Hill off big league club

The Phillies made a series of roster moves Monday, including activating three players from the disabled list. One of them was left-hander Cliff Lee, who started Monday night's series opener against the Giants in Philadelphia.

Lee rejoined the Philly rotation after being placed on the DL in late May with a strained left elbow. He entered Monday 4-4 with a 3.18 ERA this season and could be considered a trade chip should he perform well in his starts before the July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline and the Phillies -- currently in last place in the National League East -- decide to be sellers.

The team also activated infielder Reid Brignac and catcher Wil Nieves from the 15-day disabled list.

To make room on the roster, the Phillies designated outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr. for assignment, optioned infielder Cesar Hernandez to Triple-A Lehigh Valley and outrighted catcher Koyie Hill.
